Act Profile

Mediaeval Sandragon

The basic four-piece Sandragon comprises Maggie Sand, Mark Powell, Mark Jenkins and Laura Millar. The fifth member, Nick May works with the band on larger events.

Maggie (voice, keyboards) has long experience in many musical fields: as a session singer and performer in her own right. She and Mark Powell have been collaborating on Sandragon and other projects for several years.

Mark (hurdy-gurdy, cittern, voice) is well known in the folk music world as performer, recording engineer and producer, having worked with some of its biggest names. He has worked on mediaeval and historical productions such as the "Kingmaker's Feast" mediaeval banquets at Warwick Castle and the historical plays performed by Fieldwork, the touring theatre company.

Mark (drums, percussion) is a very experienced musician who is also a respected author, reviewer and TV presenter on the subject of music technology.

Laura (vocal, percussion, dance caller) has long experience as a singer, dance teacher and facilitator of events such as drum circles.

The band's fifth member, Nick (various strings) previously worked with classical rock band The Enid.

The band has worked extensively at home and abroad, playing at some of the biggest folk and mediaeval festivals, as well as mediaeval balls, themed weddings and banquets.

Since 2008, Sandragon have performed their individual take on mediaeval music at virtually all the UK mediaeval festivals and many of the larger European events. The band create a mediaeval experience, but with a contemporary slant, making the music accessible and exciting to audiences everywhere. Performances have included mediaeval balls, themed weddings and banquets.

For your event, Sandragon provide up to two hours of mediaeval entertainment. This may commence with a short acoustic set to welcome your guests, followed by a song spot, either as a featured part of the evening or while your guests are eating.

To round off the evening, the band can finish with a mediaeval dance session. This is very like a ceilidh, in which the band will walk you through the dances, which are all very easy to learn, and great fun! They're also a great way to bring your guests together, as most of the dances involve moving on to a new partner each time the dance goes round. Also, expect your guests to be dragged out on the floor to show off their dance moves for the entertainment of everyone else!

Testimonials

"Mediaeval Sandragon created a perfect atmosphere for our wedding reception. They were highly professional, lovely people.

They were also exemplary in reading the event and playing at varying volumes and tempos for each passing minute depending on mood and activity. I loved singing with them too, I wasn't expecting that!

They also took part in our murder mystery by being the first victims at the end of their set.

I cannot recommend them highly enough if you want this style of music at your event."

Peach Lambrook

"We had a great evening with Mediaeval Sandragon and Patch the Fool. They were absolutely brilliant and entertained all our Directors and Delegates all evening.

I didn't get a chance to thank them personally as I had to escort some of our guests back to their hotels, but please can you pass on my extreme thanks, they worked so hard and did a truly fantastic job! I shall definitely be recommending your booking service."

Tracey Higgins

"Booking service was clear and easy to use. Band was exactly as described and the quality of the music very very high. Also provided calling to teach guests period dances which got everybody involved.

I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Mediaeval Sandragon to anyone looking for period music and dance."

Paul Reynolds

"Hi Maggie,

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you and the rest of Mediaeval Sandragon for making our medieval wedding a very special day.

You brought to our wedding a real authentic medieval sound. The dancing was fantastic and everybody enjoyed it tremendously, and we have had friends and family asking for details of your music.

Both myself and my husband are very pleased with everything you had done for us, your music and singing created a very romantic feel for our wedding ceremony, a beautiful back drop for our banquet and perfect with dancing!

Thanks again,

Helen & Steve"

"We booked Mediaeval Sandragon for our wedding, they created an incredible atmosphere on the day and we were delighted in every respect.

We were initially unsure what to expect however they entered into the spirit of the day with great professionalism. The nice thing was that they included everyone in the dancing and music and our guests were universally delighted with the quality and variety of the performances from group dances to beautiful songs.

Many of our guests commented that the band really got everyone mixing, making it the friendliest wedding they had attended. We thought that they were amazing value and really lovely people to boot. We couldn't fault anything from the costumes, the instruments, the unique style that really made our wedding special."

Karen Wuk

"Just want to say a huge thanks to you and the guys for the wedding this Saturday.

You were exactly what I had hoped for and really kicked the day off perfectly. The number of people who came over to me to ask where I found you and commenting on how impressed they were with the performances, was really great. "

Tom & Charlotte Langton

"I found the agency excellent in providing advice and communications with the artistes, plus a friendly service helping me after the booking.

Mediaeval Sandragon are highly professional and provide a balanced and complete entertainment for an evening. Our guest (including several musicians and singers) were most impressed."

John Allan

"I booked Mediaeval Sandragon for a medieval banquet I was arranging for my 50th birthday. On the day they performed wonderfully, adjusting their act to suit the mood of the various stages of the evening. They worked seamlessly with the other performer, a Fool, together making it a totally stress-free and memorable evening for me and all my guests. The dancing led by them at the end of the evening got everybody up on their feet.

Thank you!"

Lynne Reynolds

"Mediaeval Sandragon were fantastic and exceded all our expectations. They added ambience to our wedding ceremony and were much appreciated by the guests, who commented how great they were. We would recommend them to everyone."

Christine King

"We married in Edinburgh Castle on 10.10.10. We held a second reception in London on 17.10.10 for the people we did not invite to Scotland but our theme was Medieval and we wanted to bring that flavour to the 2nd reception.

Mediaeval Sandragon not only achieved that for us, but brought a light-hearted freshness to the standard wedding “Disco” or jazz trio. We highly recommend this very talented group of terrific people who interacted with our guests and provided a memorable day for all! "

Zin Matthews

"Wonderful!

The "Dragons" made the evening really special, from the moment when they walked in blowing a fanfare- it certainly got everyone's attention and started the evening off superbly!

The music that they played during our meal was absolutely right- subdued and very evocative.
