Act Profile

The Blossom Street Singers

Blossom Street is a highly versatile and dynamic vocal ensemble of highly trained professional singers in their twenties. The group performs a wide range of music tailored to the audience or venue - from jazz and pop arrangements to close harmony to well-loved classical favourites. In 2005, Blossom Street filmed a medley of Christmas carols for BBC2, which was broadcast during the snooker championship final; since then they have performed nationwide. In 2008, the group sang to Prince Charles on ITV1 as part of his 60th birthday celebrations, and the following year gave their debut in Queen Elizabeth Hall at the Southbank Centre as part of the Voicelab series, where they performed again last December. In 2009, they filmed for the TNT Show on Channel 4, were engaged to perform Judith Weir's Missa Del Cid at St John's, Smith Square, and gave concerts in Madrid. Last year, they recorded two shows of the Sunday Half Hour for BBC Radio 2, as well as recording a CD of Christmas music for Union Square Music, and they made their BBC Radio 4 debut, broadcasting the Daily Service, which they now do quarterly. Their most recent engagements were filming adverts for sky+, HBO and Channel 5, as well as recording a CD of contemporary Christmas lullabies for Naxos.

Blossom Street is available for TV and radio work, concerts, events, festivals and private functions. Depending on your requirements, the group can provide between four and twenty singers - usually an octet is ample. The group's versatility makes it an ideal choice for weddings, perhaps providing classical, religious or spiritual music during the ceremony and lively pop and jazz arrangements at the reception. During the run up to Christmas, the ensemble may be engaged to add extra festive cheer for parties and carol concerts alike. Similarly at corporate events, Blossom Street can either perform a range of easy listening background music or provide the main entertainment of the evening, with sparkling renditions of popular hits. Either way, this adds a unique and special feel to any function.

Blossom Street was established in 2003 by Hilary Campbell, who directs the ensemble and sings soprano. The group's client list includes: Channel 5; HBO; ITV1; Channel 4; BBC2; BBC Radio 2; BBC Radio 4; sky+; Jack FM; National Lottery; National Theatre; the Duke of Kent (St James' Palace); The Prince of Wales (Wimbledon New Theatre); Royal Palace, Madrid; Aquascutum; Barclays; Marks and Spencer's; Fenwick's; House of Fraser; Canary Wharf; Cancer Research UK; Action Against Hunger; London's Air Ambulance; National Maritime Museum; Hever Castle; Charlton House; various Rotary clubs; the Worshipful Company of Masons; Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance; Union Square Music; numerous Councils; UK music clubs and societies; various concert halls; private clients.

Although based in London, the singers are very willing to travel. The ensemble's director would be delighted to suggest repertoire, but if you have a particular piece of music in mind, this can often be accommodated. The group also offers an arranging service; a professional composer will be happy to write a bespoke choral arrangement for your event or concert. In recent months, clients have requested choral arrangements of music by Elbow, Louis Armstrong, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Puccini, Marvin Gaye, Sullivan and Grieg.

The Blossom Streets CD "Sleep, Holy Babe", was Classic FM Christmas CD of the Year 2011.

As well as its busy performance schedule, Blossom Street also works with a number of emerging composers, workshopping and recording their new music. Recently, the ensemble has recorded and premiered music by Stuart Murray Turnbull, John Chambers and Jamie Brown. The group is available to hire for rehearsals and recordings; if you are a composer who would like to hear their works sung, please contact the group.

Recent Review : Blossom Street Singers, Hertford College Chapel, By Giles Woodforde Oxford Times July 08

'In December 2005,' Blossom Street's advance publicity announced, 'the Singers filmed a medley of Christmas carols for BBC2, which was broadcast during the snooker championship final.' This certainly didn't suggest a group that confines itself to the more rarefied areas of musical academia, and so this concert proved. Kicking off with a King's Singers arrangement of Can't Buy Me Love, the repertoire ranged through Purcell, Lassus, Finzi, Stanford, and Howells before finishing with Goodnight Sweetheart.

Blossom Street consists of eight professional singers. Apart from producing a disciplined, well-matched sound, it quickly became apparent that the group is united in the enthusiasm with which it goes about its work. The opening set of three pop classics displayed a great feeling for rhythm, while Miss Otis really did seem to be sorry in Miss Otis Regrets. Then came a change of gear, with Robert Pearsall's madrigal Lay a Garland.

Later, there was an even more arresting juxtaposition, when Lassus's polyphonic Musica Dei Donum Optimi was followed by A Whiter Shade of Pale. On paper, this should not have worked, but Blossom Street made it sound completely natural...
Elsewhere, there was an attractively romantic performance of Stanford's The Blue Bird, and a more serious note was struck by Howells's The Scribe, which demonstrated Blossom Street's expertise in floating a musical line. The Hertford College organ got a
